NexID presenting at CARTES

COO of NexID, Mark Cornett will be presenting at the 2014 CARTES conference in Paris, November 4-6. The presentation will include examples and discussion of biometric authentication applications requiring fake finger detection (FFD) solutions, specifically application use cases that are most vulnerable to attack via fingerprint spoofing. Examples of past spoofing attacks that could have been mitigated with FFD will be presented, along with current spoofing tactics and methodologies, with special focus on mobile devices. General hardware- and software-based fake finger detection solutions will be discussed and contrasted, including their combined “hybrid” deployment for increased levels of FFD. As part of the presentation Mr. Cornett will also be discussing NexID’s relationship with Morpho, a market leader in security solutions and pioneer in identification and detection systems.

NexID Upgrades Fake Finger Detection Solution

LONDON – Oct. 21, 2014 – NexID Biometrics LLC, whose spoof-mitigation technology boosts protection in applications with critical security-authentication needs, today announced a major improvement in the performance of its industry leading fake-finger-detection solution.

The company, based in Potsdam, N.Y., in the United States, announced the new upgrade to its fake-finger-detection SDK at the three-day Biometrics 2014 conference, which began here today at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster.

NexID said version 1.2 of its SDK, targeted for initial deployments in November 2014, boosts the accuracy rate range to 96.5 to 99.5 percent in catching bogus identification attempts across a variety of fingerprint-sensor types, such as touch or swipe, and technologies, including optical and capacitance.

The increased performance was achieved without a significant impact on computing time or resources, thereby maintaining high levels of user convenience, the company said,

“Our ongoing research has yielded additional fingerprint-imaging features that are highly effective in differentiating images captured from authentic versus fake fingerprints,” said NexID Chief Operating Officer Mark Cornett.  “In essence, we have expanded our portfolio of fingerprint-imaging features and that translates into higher accuracy.”

He said new SDK’s equal error rates – the inverse of accuracy in correctly identifying a spoof image or not — have been reduced by half from the prior version to 0.5 to 3.5 percent.

“We continue to explore ways to reduce equal error rates toward zero so that customers who deploy fingerprint-identification sensors can have complete confidence that authentications of the people using the sensors are accurate,” Cornett said.  “We’re not aware of any software-based, fingerprint spoofing-mitigation technology today that’s more rigorous than NexID’s latest software improvement.”

Last month, NexID announced a complete overhaul of its software capabilities resulting in a breakthrough that makes its solution applicable to fingerprint sensors in both mobile devices and embedded modules, such as ATMs and terminals for entry access, time and attendance, and point of sale.

The company said then it had redesigned its software for integration with embedded “match-on-chip” implementations where matching and fake-finger-detection software execute on the same processor that controls the fingerprint sensor’s image-capture, enrollment and authentication operations.

Taken together, the dramatic improvement in accuracy achieved with version 1.2 of the SDK and enhancements enabled by the software redesign mean state-of-art fake finger detection is now available across the entire spectrum of fingerprint sensor devices.

Breakthrough achieves improved speed, processing efficiency, security, convenience

TAMPA, Fla. – Sept. 16, 2014 – NexID Biometrics LLC, whose spoof-mitigation technology boosts protection in applications with critical security-authentication needs, today announced an enhanced fake-finger-detection solution for both embedded fingerprint-sensor systems and those yet to be introduced. The enhancement stems from a significant breakthrough in speed and processing efficiency.

The company, based in Potsdam, N.Y., announced the new software capabilities at the Global Identity Summit being held in the Tampa Convention Center this week. The newly enhanced NexID software is available now for custom deployments.

By completely overhauling its software’s capabilities, NexID has produced a targeted solution that’s ideal for both mobile devices with fingerprint sensors, including smartphones from Apple and Samsung that have been proven vulnerable to spoofing, and embedded modules — such as ATMs and terminals for entry access, time and attendance, and point of sale – which combine sensor and microprocessor controllers.

NexID achieved the breakthrough by redesigning its software for integration with embedded “match-on-chip” implementations where matching and fake-finger-detection software execute on the same processor that controls the fingerprint sensor’s image-capture, enrollment and authentication operations. Delivering high levels of security and convenience was another goal.

“The breakthrough outcome of our newest version is that NexID’s fake-finger-detection technology was re-architected to execute the software’s full feature set of analysis and spoof mitigation while running on embedded processors with far less computing performance and resources – such as slower processors, limited code space and data-storage constraints — than traditional desktops, laptops, and even high-end mobile devices,” said Mark Cornett, NexID’s chief operating officer.

“We’re talking about going from processor clock speeds of GHz down to MHz, multi-core processors down to single-core, and from Mb of memory down to Kb of memory. To accomplish this, we created new and innovative techniques for image enhancement, feature extraction and statistical analysis to execute our fake-finger-detection algorithms in a resource-limited environment,” Cornett said. “These techniques have resulted in fake-finger-detection performance that matches our best performing implementations, while maintaining processing times that meet user-convenience thresholds.”

He said many of the devices addressed by the upgrade in NexID software are used in situations where the person whose identity is being authenticated is alone and unsupervised, although perhaps monitored by camera, and is therefore more capable of covertly spoofing the fingerprint sensor than if he or she were in a more observed or monitored situation such as a border crossing or security-related airport kiosk.

Depending on the device or application, NexID’s fake-finger-detection solution could be used to supplement other factors of authentication, such as pins and passwords, or to replace pins and passwords as a more convenient form of authentication, such as unlocking a mobile device or using an ATM, Cornett said.

As a technology-agnostic solution, other benefits of NexID’s upgraded fake-finger detection software include that it is less costly than hardware-based solutions; requires no additional space or hardware requirements, is field upgradeable, with no need to replace hardware and gives users the flexibility to choose their own thresholds of fake-finger detection based on the requirements of particular applications.

Company’s biometric technology improves secure authentication for mobile devices

POTSDAM, N.Y. — MAY 7, 2014 – NexID Biometrics LLC, the first company to offer liveness detection software for fingerprint-sensors on mobile devices, today launched its Mobile Live Finger Detection (LFD) application for the Android operating system.

NexID’s Mobile LFD application ported to the Android platform means that makers of Android smartphones and other mobile devices can improve the accuracy and security of the devices’ fingerprint-sensing authentication to greater than 95 percent.

Mobile devices with fingerprint scanners on the market today – but lacking liveness detection — are highly susceptible to having bogus fingerprints spoof the sensors. Goode Intelligence, a U.K. research consultancy, has predicted that as many as 3.4 billion smartphones will be equipped with biometric sensors by 2018.

“At NexID, we believe augmenting fingerprint sensors with liveness detection is ‘must have’ functionality because it facilitates mobile commerce, providing both users and services providers with confidence that mobile transactions can occur safely and securely,” said Mark Cornett, NexID’s chief operating officer.

“While Apple validated the convenience of fingerprint authentication as an alternative to passwords on mobile devices, the spoof of the iPhone 5S — and more recently the Samsung Galaxy S5® — confirmed that the current level of security is vulnerable to spoofing,” he added. “Clearly the layers of security for unlocking mobile devices and their applications need to be stronger to properly meet the needs of users, facilitators of mobile commerce and business people responsible for their companies’ BYOD policies.”

Cornett said NexID’s Mobile LFD solution for the Android platform enables manufacturers of mobile devices and fingerprint-sensor technology, as well as mCommerce vendors, to add robust liveness detection to mitigate the vulnerability to spoofing and build confidence in the use of fingerprint authentication for mobile devices.

NexID RECEIVES GRANTS TO FUND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT, COMMERCIALIZATION OF BIOMETRIC ‘LIVENESS DETECTION’

Company awarded funding that acknowledges its highly specialized expertise

POTSDAM, N.Y. – April 30, 2014 – NexID Biometrics LLC, whose “liveness detection” technology boosts protection in applications with critical security-authentication needs, today announced it has received a series of funding totaling $325,000, including a highly competitive award given to emerging companies in central New York state.

NexID, the first company to offer liveness detection software for fingerprint-sensors on mobile devices, said the grants will fund further research, development and commercialization of additional modes of authentication that go beyond its deep expertise in detecting and mitigating attempts to spoof fingerprint scanners used for authenticating entry to secure locations and systems.

NexID will participate with Clarkson University here and West Virginia University in the joint research into biometric security technology sponsored by the National Science Foundation and gain the right to license technology that results from that research. NexID is a venture “spinout” from both institutions, with several of the company’s founders serving on their faculty.

To expand the NSF-funded work at Clarkson and WVU, NexID has received a matching contribution of $100,000 from Seaway Private Equity Corporation (SPEC) to develop a commercial liveness-detection application for security systems that scan people’s faces and the irises in human eyes.  SPEC provides early stage equity capital funding for companies in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., with significant growth potential.

NexID also received a $150,000 Grant for Growth from the Syracuse-based CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity (CEO), which will be augmented by another matching contribution from SPEC in the amount of $75,000.  The CenterState CEO grant to NexID was one of only two organizations awarded from among scores of companies that applied for funding.

“We expect this funding to extend and accelerate our operations through the two to three years it may take before NexID begins to realize royalty revenue from the licensing of our technology in these new areas,” said Dr. Stephanie Schuckers, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson University and CEO of NexID.

Privately held, NexID has operated organically since 2007 by licensing the use of its software to makers of traditional fingerprint-scanning systems to authenticate users at international border crossings and to gain access to laptops, systems and secure locations.  NexID’s research into spoofing techniques and liveness detection software raises the effectiveness of fingerprint-scanning systems to over 95 percent.

The introduction of fingerprint scanning in popular smartphones, such as Apple’s iPhone 5S with TouchID and Samsung’s Galaxy S® 5, has caused the market for scanner-equipped mobile devices – and the need to safeguard them from spoofing — to explode.  Meanwhile, heightened concerns for security around the world are driving global demand for additional modes of biometric authentication.
